Oval whetstone for sharpening a scythe.
Whetstone, oval model, 23 cm long, with fine grit. Suitable for sharpening a scythe, knife and other tools.
When sharpening a scythe, a scythe sharpening tool (strekel) is almost always used first to set and de-burr the edge. A scythe sharpening tool is used dry. A whetstone is finer and truly restores the sharpness.
How to use a whetstone
Soak the whetstone for 5 to 15 minutes and keep it wet during use. This ensures the grit works properly and prevents heat buildup.
Use the stone with light pressure; the weight of your hand is generally sufficient. Excessive pressure can hollow out the edge and cause nicks. Always stroke with long movements at a steady angle. If the angle is too steep the edge becomes dull, which is visible as a shiny rim.
