Oval whetstone for sharpening a scythe.
Oval-model whetstone, 23 cm long, with a fine grit. Suitable for sharpening a scythe, knife, and other tools.
When sharpening a scythe, a scythe smoother (strekel) is almost always used first to set and deburr the edge. A scythe smoother is used dry. A whetstone is finer and truly restores sharpness.
Whetstone instructions
Soak the whetstone for 5 to 15 minutes and keep it wet during use. This ensures proper action of the grit and prevents heat buildup.
Use the stone with light pressure; in principle, the weight of your hand is sufficient. Too much pressure can hollow out the edge and cause notches. Always stroke with long passes at a fixed angle. If the angle is too steep, the edge will become dull, which is visible as a shiny edge.
